When I walk past the storefront
\nI catch wisps of teatree oil and lavender.
\nIn Austin that’s the smell of money
\nlaundered through hippie recuperation.<\/p>\n

Here the bourgeoisie want you to know
\nthey’re cool. They’re just like you.
\nThey walk and talk and eat food
\njust like you. They like the bands you like
\nand they eat at food trailers like you
\nused to before the rent ate up all
\nyour expendable income.
\n(but they don’t tell you their food trailers
\nare small plate artisanal eateries.)<\/p>\n

In the early oughts you could live here
\non $10\/h. If you didn’t care where you lived
\nyou could get a 1bd for $450.
\nThen people with money found out this place
\ndidn’t suck, and they made sure to make it
\nsuck. hard.<\/p>\n

You see this all over.
\nSan Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Nashville,
\nMinneapolis, Santa Fe, Madison, DFW,
\nSan Antonio, etc.
\nMoneyed people see something authentic
\nand beautiful
\nand they synthesize that energy into some
\nvile capital slurry that feels like
\na Disneyland edifice of a real, true thing.<\/p>\n

There are a few enclaves where the tendrils
\nof capital haven’t tainted everything.
\nThere are viable cultural happenings.
\nBut I won’t mention them here
\nin case the bourgeoisie are scouting
\nfor their next spoilings.<\/p>\n

For now I have to pretend I like the smell
\nof teatree oil and lavender.
\nI have to pretend the bourgeoisie are like me.
\nI have to let them appropriate the authenticity of
\nthe proletariat, lest I ruin the party for everyone
\nand find myself in the place
\nwhere a job can never happen
\nand nobody will let me snort their coke.<\/p>\n
