Greenlea"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 style=\"padding-left: 80px; text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photo : Peter Shefler, visual artist and poet<\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We collide in a tender fugue<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reeds with slender necks<br \/>\njostling against each other by wind<br \/>\nand circumstance\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">We are fragile<br \/>\nbeings rushing through time<br \/>\nas if it were of no consequence<br \/>\nbumps and bruises crushing\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">red stains into our skin<br \/>\npanes where air is thin<br \/>\nand the soul breathes<br \/>\nmore visibly <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">purpura witnessing<br \/>\nwhere words will not<br \/>\nHow we suffer from small<br \/>\nwounds <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">we inflict unconsciously<br \/>\nintentional tramplings<br \/>\nin the fields. We wield<br \/>\npower carelessly <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">or not at all, watch silently<br \/>\nas another brother<br \/>\ngoes down; a sister falls<br \/>\nin the moonlight <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Oh, the terrible ways we fail<br \/>\neach other, refusing to speak<br \/>\nallowing the wind to carry our pain<br \/>\nover the horizon in soundless <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">ripples until &#8212; like wolves drawn to blood &#8212;<br \/>\nthe ones with scythes come to cut<br \/>\nour necks and leave us rootless<br \/>\nfrom the land<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><em><strong>Artist Statement: <\/strong>Art has a unique ability, even responsibility, to wake people up, to help them engage emotionally with fearful and disturbing subjects, and hopefully, stir them to action. Pablo Neruda said, &#8216;Poetry is bread&#8217; and a tool for justice. I believe language is powerful and that poetry can indeed play a role in justice-making and social change.<\/em><\/h6>\n<h6><em><strong>Gayle J. Greenlea <\/strong>is an award-winning poet and counselor for survivors of sexual and gender-related violence. Her poem, &#8220;Wonderland\u201d, received the Australian Poetry Prod Award in 2011. She shortlisted and longlisted for the Fish Poetry Prize in 2013, and debuted her first novel, Zero Gravity, at the KGB Literary Bar in Manhattan in 2016.
