{"id":2918,"date":"2019-12-13T08:51:21","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T12:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lineriderpress.com\/headlinepoetry\/?p=2918"},"modified":"2019-12-22T18:37:55","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T22:37:55","slug":"a-poem-an-hour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lineriderpress.com\/headlinepoetry\/2019\/12\/13\/a-poem-an-hour\/","title":{"rendered":"A poem an hour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">I whip out a poem every hour on the hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am the convenience store of hot poems<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">styrofoam words, a variety of day-glow colors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">My feelings are stale salty popcorn, not real<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">butter at all, best to be avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">There are sex offenders by the slim-jims,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">the lady behind the counter beats me up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The lonely dog by the glass door ha<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">mites. You think, cute. But best to stay away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">Every poem is coming off the same highway<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">in a different car. Some need gas, some<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">visit dirty restrooms. Some come in<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">to read gun magazines, unaware<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">of the tension in the western corner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She says &#8220;I told you I was LATE. You never<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> listen.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">He sighs, \u201cI didn\u2019t know what you<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">meant\u201d and grabs a box of good-and-plenty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">The sky turns dark. We know to stay inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everyone looks up at<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a pile of deadfall leaves, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brown swirls in a<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> imperfect tornado, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">creating negative energy by the pumps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">Then a poem arrives, too clean, preppy, whispy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It walks to the register, gently ask<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for Benson &amp; Hedges. The other&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">poems<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;color: #000000\">roll their eyes, disgusted and disillusioned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I squat with my pants down, overly drun<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">k <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">peeing by the ATM, waiting fo<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">r copper pennies <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to fall from<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> heaven, eyeing the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">poem<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through the <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">large pained window.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I whip out a poem every hour on the hour.
