Greenlea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: right;\"><em>photo by Man Ray<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Somewhere the notes fell<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">from our music &#8212; a dark indigo<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">pooling around the polished<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">sunlit surfaces of our instruments<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even the birds in the fig tree<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">seem to notice the hushed tones<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">careful steps outside<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">each other\u2019s rooms. They chirp a forlorn<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">adagietto doloroso to our movements<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For every missing note<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">there is a deeper<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">timbre that cannot be expressed<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">that will not rest easy on the staff<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When did we stop speaking without words?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tonight the wind plays a concert<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">in the trees and I miss the mellifluous<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">tones of our worn and beaten<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stradivarius. I am bowed to your strings<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">in a lonely fugue. The ghost<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of your hand breathes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">against my cheek as the clock ticks<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">on the mantle, a metronome of memory<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">whose pendulum I long to adjust.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">I can almost hear your feet stamp<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">against the doormat as you shake<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the rain from your coat<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">but it is only the rumble<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of distant thunder<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Artist Statement:<\/strong> Art has a unique ability, even responsibility, to wake people up, to help them engage emotionally with fearful and disturbing subjects, and hopefully, stir them to action. Pablo Neruda said, &#8216;Poetry is bread&#8217; and a tool for justice. I believe language is powerful and that poetry can indeed play a role in justice-making and social change. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Author\u2019s Bio: <\/strong>Gayle J. Greenlea is an award-winning poet and counselor for survivors of sexual and gender-related violence. Her poem, &#8220;Wonderland\u201d, received the Australian Poetry Prod Award in 2011. She shortlisted and longlisted for the Fish Poetry Prize in 2013, and debuted her first novel, Zero Gravity, at the KGB Literary Bar in Manhattan in 2016.
